Lande Hekt tornou-se discretamente uma das melhores compositoras underground do Reino Unido. No seu álbum de estreia de 2021, Going To Hell, e em House Without a View, de 2022, explorou a sua identidade queer, sobriedade e traumas de infância através da lente de um indie-pop sincero e coloquial, o que a levou a abrir concertos para artistas como Alvvays, Throwing Muses e The Beths. O seu novo álbum, Lucky Now, escrito e gravado com o produtor Matthew Simms (Wire, It Hugs Back), reflete a versão mais madura e confiante de Lande Hekt até à data. “I’m not as concerned about how I’m presenting myself,” diz Hekt. “I’ve tried to think less about how things are coming across, and just write songs that make me feel connected to myself and what I value.”
As referências musicais de Hekt — The Wedding Present, The Sundays, The Replacements — mantêm-se as mesmas, mas ao mesmo tempo explorou outras influências. Lucky Now deve muito ao twee-pop e jangle-pop dos anos 80, como The Pastels, Tallulah Gosh e The Bats, bem como a versões mais modernas do som, como Autocamper e Jeanines, nas suas melodias extáticas e arrebatadoras e guitarras magníficas e palpáveis. O som combina com a nova perspetiva lírica de Hekt, onde, embora o desespero e a ansiedade apareçam, ela procura profundamente encontrar a gratidão. “I wanted to try and push for something slightly more positive, which I’m trying to do more of generally — just to not fall apart,” diz Hekt.
Em sintonia com isto, a faixa de abertura “Kitchen ii” é uma canção de amor sobre a partilha de momentos simples e domésticos com um parceiro, enquanto “Rabbits” é uma canção sobre esperança inspirada por um solstício de verão passado em Glastonbury Tor. Enquanto isso, a mais lenta e acústica “Middle of the Night” fala sobre “reeling from a realisation of being properly happy for the first time in my life,” diz Hekt. Hekt regressa também às composições com temática política, depois de evitar a política tanto na vida pessoal como na vida musical durante um período de desilusão, em “Circular” (“they change the law like it’s a game and we’re the pawns getting played”) e “A Million Broken Hearts”. “If you get swept up in the notion that being politically engaged in any way is embarrassing, that is so dangerous,” diz agora Hekt. “It’s really important to try and find a way to reject that.”
Durante o processo de criação do álbum, Hekt também se mudou de Bristol para a sua cidade natal, Exeter. Escreveu a faixa de encerramento de Lucky Now, "Coming Home", sobre a experiência de regressar a casa após uma longa digressão; sentir os cheiros familiares, reconhecer os rostos conhecidos. De muitas formas, Lucky Now fala de regresso — regresso à alegria, regresso a lugares e partes de si que um dia ficaram para trás. Quem era pode parecer inalcançável, mas por vezes é possível construir uma ponte.
“Favourite Pair of Shoes” é o primeiro single de Lucy Now, “I wrote this song when I was listening to a lot of The Bats and The Chills, it probably sounds nothing like any of that Flying Nun stuff but that was what was inspiring me at the time. Despite the lines that lean towards despair, I think this is quite a hopeful song. It’s about rising out of a pit of hopelessness and doing something really positive. The song features my old friend and longtime collaborator Samuel Bedford. We first sang together when we were 16, we recorded a song together for his folk solo project, then we were in an indie rock band together when we were 21 called Selfish Son. Sam sang on my song Kitchen in 2020 and now he sings on this song and Coming Home. Each of these collaborations are 5 years apart which is tidy.
